Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson is the first Black woman to earn a doctorate at MIT. Her research led to the development of the portable fax, touchtone phones, solar cells, caller ID, call waiting and fiber optics.

Jerry Lawson is considered by many to be the father of modern gaming for his work in the creation of the first home game console that utilized interchangeable cartridges.

In April of 1989, students at Detroit’s Wayne State University led an 11 day protest known as the Study-In. These students occupied the Student Center Building, which was the Helen Newberry Joy Student Services Building at the time. They refused to leave until the university met their demands to stop dismantling the Center for Black Studies and transform it into an accredited Liberal Arts department.
